Chapter 015 - She has a very conflicting personality. (2)
The foreign teacher spoke in English to Chu Qianli. He gently encouraged her to give it a try and reassured her that the question was very simple.
Tan Muxing glanced over at her stealthily. He wrote the answer down on a piece of paper and quietly pushed it over next to her hand. Nevertheless, Chu Qianli never lowered her head and, therefore, did not see the note.
Chu Qianli repeated, “Sorry.”
The foreign teacher looked disappointed but did not press the issue. He turned to someone else for an answer.
“You are kidding me, right? That problem really wasn’t that difficult…” Someone grumbled softly. The foreign teacher had given her the simplest problem intentionally and she couldn’t even answer that.
“She doesn’t even come close to measuring up to He Shichen.”
He Shichen was a legendary character in class. Nobody would have thought that Chu Qianli would be the exact opposite of him.
The others had not noticed Chu Qianli’s differences earlier but now they recalled the differences between the environment that she grew up in versus theirs. Perhaps she had never had a class that was taught entirely in English before and, as such, couldn’t even understand the question. That would explain why she kept on repeating “Sorry.”
Perhaps her English wasn’t all that great either. Words had it that some villagers were barely literate.
Humans’ imagination was boundless and Chu Qianli had quickly turned into an illiterate in others’ eyes.
In between classes, Tan Muxing asked her cautiously, “Have you never learned this before?”
He worried that he would hurt her self-esteem. He had heard that she was from an alright background and that she might never had a decent education.
Chu Qianli, feeling shameful, said, “I’m sorry. I had brought shame to my village. All the other students in the school in our village are better than me.”
This was the most damage ever done to the reputation of their village. Mainly she was a fake high-school student. She had never paid attention in school before and now that she was back at the He’s, she had brought shame to her village.
Sure enough, He Shichen had the same doubts. He walked over with his brows furrowed. “Can you not understand English?”
He recalled that Chu Qianli had been to school in the village. If she couldn’t solve any of the problem at all, she must not have understood the question.”
Chu Qianli was taken aback a little, “No, I understood the question.”
He Shichen just figured that she was being stubborn. That made him feel even more impatient. He said to her wholeheartedly, “It’s not shameful that you don’t understand English. You can switch to classes taught in Chinse instead. There’s no need to be stubborn and end up making yourself suffer.”
He Shichen worried that she felt embarrassed and insisted on staying in the English class because she didn’t want to become the laughingstock of others. Learning the knowledge was the number one priority. How others see her was not important.
Chu Qianli said in a very sincerely tone, “No, I can understand……”
He Shichen looked unhappy. He was certain that she was just being stubborn and refused to switch classes in order to protect her fragile ego.
He Shichen, “Nonsense……” You are just trying to put up the front.
Chu Qianli rebutted his thinking the very next second. She said to him very righteously, “I did understand what the teacher was saying, it was just not sinking in!”
Chu Qianli, “You can question my intelligence but not my English.”
She was strong in Mercury field and was talented in the language area.
He Shichen, “……”
He Shichen didn’t understand what she was saying so he just turned and left. He was so angry that he didn’t want to talk to her anymore. He walked away briskly and decided to let her keep up her front at all cost. He had done what was within his power trying to help her.
When they switched classrooms again, Tan Muxing suggested to her nicely, “If you were asked questions again in the next class, you can look at my answer.”
It wouldn’t be nice for Chu Qianli to try to muddle through all of her classes. It would make the others in class think that she was uneducated and that would give her a poor image in class.
